smallman street
The street was once a busy rail yard delivering goods to the adjacent Produce Terminal and is now a 30m wide expanse of asphalt with the long produce building lying empty. However, with the surrounding Strip District rapidly becoming Pittsburgh’s new trendy hot-spot and the planned re-purposing of the Produce Terminal to include office, retail, and a food-hall - change is coming!
We were part of a consultant team that developed a public realm strategy for the street. This involved a detailed analysis of all aspects of life in the district including: local business opening hours and parking requirements; pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle movement patterns; and environmental assessments of light / shade, noise, and pollution.
Then, through a series of workshops with local businesses and residents, we worked through the complex issues to design a space that retained the function of the street while integrating steps / slopes up to the Produce Terminal platform, tree planting, seating and flexible plazas.
